The Vocational Education Lao PDR (VELA) Project of GIZ Laos, funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany supported the organisation of capacity building for vocational teachers.

Since July 1st, 2019, 9 teachers from Champasak Technical College and 10 teachers from Luang Prabang Technical College have been actively participating in the training, which runs until July 26th, at the Lao National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality (LANITH) in Vientiane. The main objective of this 20-day workshop is to further improve the skills of vocational teachers and upon return to their respective colleges, the teacher will be able to better implement Dual-Cooperative Training (DCT) programmes in Food and Beverage Service and Food Production Professionals.

The workshop contents focus on: effective training methods development, communication skills, English for food and beverage service, taking food orders and providing table service and, applying basic techniques of commercial cookery. Moreover, the workshop is served as a platform for discussion and exchanging of best practices and challenges among the teachers from the 2 colleges regarding the development of lesson plans and teaching methodology.

While the vocational teachers who are responsible for implementing the DCT programmes have received multiple capacity buildings through which they were familiarised with the developed curriculum and lesson plans, there is still a huge need to further upgrade their skills to deliver the school-based contents of the curriculum with high quality.
